Bonds
A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) is a simple way to invest in mutual funds by putting in a small, fixed amount of money at regular intervals (like monthly) rather than a large amount all at once.
Benefits of Bond Investment:
- Predictable Regular Income: Bonds provide fixed or floating interest payments (coupons) at set intervals—monthly, quarterly, or annually—making them ideal for retirees or those seeking steady cash flow.
- Capital Preservation: Unlike stocks, bonds aim to return your full principal amount at maturity, provided the issuer remains financially healthy. High-quality government bonds are considered virtually risk-free in this regard.
- Portfolio Diversification: Bonds often move differently than stocks. In 2026, as equity markets face potential cyclical corrections, bonds offer a “safety premium” to stabilize overall portfolio returns.
- Higher Yields than Fixed Deposits: In the current 2026 market, AAA-rated corporate bonds are expected to offer returns between 7.5% and 9%, significantly outperforming the average 5.5%–6.5% offered by traditional bank FDs.
Benefits of Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGBs)
- SGBs allow you to invest in gold digitally while earning additional interest a benefit not available with physical gold.
- Dual Returns: You benefit from any rise in gold prices plus a fixed interest of 2.5% per annum on your initial investment.
- Superior Safety: There are no concerns about purity, theft, or storage costs (like locker fees) as the bonds are held in a Demat account or as a digital certificate.
- Tax Advantages (Updated 2026 Rules):
- Original Subscribers: Capital gains are 100% tax-free if you buy directly from the RBI and hold the bond until its 8-year maturity.
- Secondary Market Buyers: As per Budget 2026, if you buy SGBs from a stock exchange, you are no longer eligible for tax-free maturity; gains will be taxed at 12.5% (Long-Term) or at your slab rate (Short-Term).
- Loan Facility: SGBs are widely accepted as collateral for bank loans, allowing you to access funds without selling your gold.
