Personal Accidental Insurance
Personal Accidental Insurance
Personal Accident (PA) Insurance is a specialized financial product that provides a lump-sum compensation in the event of death or disability resulting solely from an accident. Unlike health insurance which covers illnesses, PA insurance is designed to protect your earning capacity against sudden, external mishaps.
The Critical Need for PA Insurance
- High Road Risk: India continues to see a high rate of road accidents (over 1.7 lakh deaths in 2023), making this cover essential for daily commuters and frequent travelers.
- Income Protection: While health insurance pays hospital bills, it doesn’t replace lost income if you are bedridden or disabled. PA insurance provides a “living benefit” to help you meet EMIs and daily expenses.
- Limited Scope of Other Plans: Standard life insurance usually doesn’t pay for partial disabilities, and health insurance won’t provide a lump sum for long-term lifestyle changes after an injury.
- Mandatory Requirement: IRDAI mandates a ₹15 lakh Compulsory Personal Accident (CPA) cover for all owner-drivers of vehicles in India, unless they already have a standalone policy of equal or higher value.
Disability Payouts:
- Permanent Total Disability (PTD): Pays 100% to 125% of the sum insured for total loss of limbs, sight, or speech.
- Permanent Partial Disability (PPD): Pays a percentage (e.g., 50% for loss of one eye) based on the severity of the injury.
- Temporary Total Disability (TTD): Provides a weekly allowance (often up to ₹25,000) if you are temporarily bedridden and unable to work.
- Child Education Grant: Offers a one-time payment (often 10% of the sum insured) to support your children’s education in the event of your death or total disability.
- Global Coverage: Most standalone policies protect you against accidents anywhere in the world, 24/7.
- No Waiting Period or Medical Tests: Coverage typically starts from Day 1 without the need for pre-policy medical check-ups.
- Additional Costs: Covers secondary expenses like ambulance charges, funeral costs, and even home/vehicle modifications needed after a disability.
Key Benefits of Investment
Accidental Death Benefit: Pays 100% of the Sum Insured to the nominee if the policyholder dies due to an accident.
